Overview

Wigan Council’s current waste-service page lists three borough recycling centres: Kirkless, Slag Lane and Chanters. Our three associated listings cover the complete current network. Slag Lane is in Leigh and Chanters is in Atherton, so their neighbouring town and postcode labels describe the sites’ geography rather than duplicates or missing Wigan facilities.

Use the single-visit permit system

Qualifying vans, pick-ups and other non-car vehicles need the appropriate permit. Each permit covers one visit. The council reviews use after 12 redeemed permits; this is not described as an automatic annual maximum. Allow time for the confirmation email and show the permit on a phone or printed copy.

Hire vehicles and identification

Apply once the hire vehicle’s registration is known. Take the hire agreement, permit and driving licence. Check the additional address evidence required with an older paper driving licence. Household permits cannot be used for trade waste.

Trailer limits depend on the centre

The maximum overall trailer length, including the hitch, is 3m at Slag Lane and Chanters, and 4m at Kirkless. Check the vehicle/trailer combination and permit requirement before travelling. Unload manually; tipping mechanisms must not be used.

About Wigan Council

Wigan Council operates three Recycling Centres, providing essential services for residents. To ensure safety, only adults may unload vehicles, while children and pets must remain inside at all times. Proof of Wigan Borough residency is required, usually by presenting a driving licence. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are not permitted. Tipping mechanisms must not be used; all vehicles must be unloaded manually. Trailers over 4 metres are banned, and trailers exceeding 3 metres are not allowed at Slag Lane or Chanters.
