Resident, vehicle and pedestrian passes

The Barnsley and Doncaster scheme has different pass types. Cars, small vans and other eligible smaller vehicles use a resident pass. Eligible larger vans and vehicles towing trailers use a vehicle pass, allowing 12 visits in 12 months. Pedestrians and cyclists need a pedestrian pass and a booking for each visit. Do not park outside and walk waste in.

Hired vehicles and one-off visits

A qualifying one-off booking can cover a hired or borrowed vehicle, a vehicle awaiting its V5C, or a bereavement clearance. The limit is four one-off bookings per domestic property in 12 months. Check the vehicle exclusions before hiring.

About Barnsley Council

Barnsley Council operates four household waste recycling centres at Smithies (Barnsley), Goldthorpe (Highgate), Penistone (Springvale), and Worsbrough (Worsbrough Dale), all open daily except Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day. Hours vary by season: generally 9 am–5 pm April–September (4 pm in winter), except Worsbrough (8 am–7 pm summer, 8 am–4 pm winter). A digital recycling centre pass or an appropriate advance booking is required to use them.

Recycling Centre Access & Hazardous Waste

Access Requirements

  • Digital passes and bookings: Register for the appropriate resident, vehicle or pedestrian pass, or make a qualifying one-off booking. The scheme also covers Doncaster sites.
  • Fire Safety: You must remove all batteries and flammable liquids from gadgets and toys before disposal to prevent site fires.

Specialist Disposal (Worsbrough Only)

While most sites accept standard recycling, Worsbrough is the only location equipped for:

  • Asbestos & Chemicals: Separate advance asbestos or hazardous-waste bookings are required at Worsbrough. Household chemical and pesticide bookings are limited to two per year; check the separate asbestos guidance for its requirements.
  • Plasterboard: Small amounts only; all bonded material must be removed first.
  • Pesticides & Solvents: Strict packaging rules apply—check guidelines before visiting.

Waste Quick-Check

Accepted at All Sites:
Vapes, Mattresses, Sofas, Coffee Pods, Cooking Oil, and Hard Plastics.
Not Accepted Anywhere:
Vehicle parts, excessive DIY waste, or large amounts of soil (hire a skip for these).
