About Barnsley Council
Barnsley Council operates four household waste recycling centres at Smithies (Barnsley), Goldthorpe (Highgate), Penistone (Springvale), and Worsbrough (Worsbrough Dale), all open daily except Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day. Hours vary by season: generally 9 am–5 pm April–September (4 pm in winter), except Worsbrough (8 am–7 pm summer, 8 am–4 pm winter). A permit or digital pass (soon replacing paper) is required to use them.

Recycling Centre Access & Hazardous Waste
Access Requirements
📲 Digital Pass Mandatory: All residents must register online for a vehicle or pedestrian pass. This is also valid for Doncaster sites.
🔥 Fire Safety: You must remove all batteries and flammable liquids from gadgets and toys before disposal to prevent site fires.
📍 Specialist Disposal (Worsbrough Only)
While most sites accept standard recycling, Worsbrough is the only location equipped for:
- Asbestos & Chemicals: Requires a mandatory Hazardous Waste Booking (max 2 per year).
- Plasterboard: Small amounts only; all bonded material must be removed first.
- Pesticides & Solvents: Strict packaging rules apply—check guidelines before visiting.
