Southend-on-Sea City Council’s official Household Waste Recycling Centre network has two sites: Stock Road and Leigh Marshes. Both are represented on this page. The council’s guidance uses the HWRC terminology and provides separate information for each site, including accepted household waste; use the relevant listing and current council guidance before travelling.

Vehicle access and household waste declarations

Commercial-type vehicles carrying your own household waste can visit on Sundays from noon to 4pm. Bring proof of your Southend address and complete a Household Waste Declaration Form. Commercial-type vehicles towing trailers cannot enter, and business waste is not accepted.

Hire vans can visit during normal opening hours with the hire agreement and proof of address. Hires lasting more than seven days also require the declaration form. A trailer with a load bed between 1.8m and 3m requires a declaration; trailers over 3m are excluded. Pedestrian access is not permitted.

Choosing Stock Road or Leigh Marshes

Stock Road is normally closed on Thursdays and Leigh Marshes on Wednesdays. Seasonal opening times differ, so check the council’s timetable before setting off.

Check the council’s current advice on fridge and freezer disposal before transporting an appliance, including which centre can accept it.

Recycling centres in Southend-on-Sea are reserved for city residents only. To enter, you must present valid identification, such as a current driving licence or a council tax bill, to confirm your address. For safety reasons, children and pets cannot leave vehicles while on site. The facilities are mainly for getting rid of bulky household waste. If you have a bicycle in good condition, it can be donated to the Reuse Shop at Stock Road.
