Vehicle and trailer permits

Some vans, pick-ups, campervans, minibuses and trailers require a permit.

Permits are free, available only to Somerset residents and must be displayed when visiting.

Each household can hold a maximum of:

  • one van or similar large-capacity vehicle permit
  • one trailer permit

Hired vehicles

A compliant vehicle hired for up to 3 days can be used without a normal permit if the visitor brings the hire agreement and completes the temporary permit process on site.

ANPR and site monitoring

Automatic Number Plate Recognition and CCTV operate at Somerset recycling centres to monitor site use, vehicle permits and suspected commercial-waste misuse.

Household and commercial waste

Household permits must only be used for the resident’s own household waste.

Somerset also operates separate paid commercial-waste facilities at selected recycling centres.

About this category

About Somerset Council

Somerset Council runs sixteen recycling sites throughout the county, offering local people practical options for managing unwanted items. Visitors can take a variety of materials, including wood, garden cuttings, clothing, scrap metal, cardboard, and small electricals. Some locations also have reuse outlets, where items in good condition are sold on, reducing waste and supporting sustainability. By providing these facilities, Somerset makes it easier for households to recycle more, cut down on rubbish sent to landfill, and benefit the wider environment.
