Overview
Orkney Islands Council’s current guidance identifies five main Recycling Centres (Civic Amenity Sites): Hatston, Garson, Bossack, St Margaret’s Hope and Cursiter. Our three associated records cover Hatston, Garson and Cursiter. Coverage is incomplete: Bossack and St Margaret’s Hope are missing. The council also lists additional island recycling points, which are separate from these five main sites.

Separate household-waste sites from recycling-only sites
Hatston, Garson and Bossack accept black-bag and bulky household waste. St Margaret’s Hope and Cursiter accept recyclables only. Check the council’s five-site list as well as the associated records below before choosing where to take your load.
Take upholstered furniture to Hatston
All waste upholstered furniture must go to Hatston for separate disposal. Other materials vary by site; use the council’s material lists before loading appliances, oils or building materials.
Check the site’s individual opening days
The five sites have different weekday and weekend opening patterns. Skips filling up can also cause temporary closures or refused loads. Check the council’s current timetable and notices, particularly before an island journey or a large clearance.
