Overview

The Isle of Wight Council’s current service identifies two Household Waste Recycling Centres: Lynnbottom near Arreton and Afton Marsh at Freshwater. Our two associated records cover both, so the household network is complete. “Freshwater” is the locality for Afton Marsh rather than a third centre, and the council’s mini recycling sites are a separate facility type.

Vehicle permits and hire vans

Vans, campervans, pick-ups and other specified commercial-type vehicles require a permit for household waste. Ordinary cars, 4x4s and people carriers do not, unless they meet the car-derived-van criteria. Each permit allows 12 visits and is linked to the vehicle; allow up to ten working days for delivery.

A vehicle hired for four days or less does not need a permit. Bring the hire agreement. Longer hires require a permit. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, tractors, agricultural vehicles and horseboxes cannot use the household centres.

DIY and restricted materials

Check the council’s DIY guidance before taking building materials. Asbestos and plasterboard have specific arrangements, and household access does not authorise disposal of trade or commercial waste.

About this category

About Isle of Wight Council

Isle of Wight Council operates two recycling centres for residents to dispose of household waste responsibly. To ensure safety and efficiency, sort and separate waste before arrival and wear suitable clothing such as closed-toe shoes, long sleeves or gloves. You must bring your booking reference or risk being turned away. Children under 16 must remain in vehicles, and safe walking routes must be followed. Staff will direct vehicles to bays and guide you to use open skips only.
