Register for the correct ePass

Hertfordshire residents need a free ePass, including for ordinary cars. Car ePasses are available immediately, last three years and allow unlimited visits. ANPR checks the registered number plate; no printout or smartphone is needed. Ordinary visits do not require an appointment.

Vans, trailers and hired vehicles

The van-and-trailer ePass allows 12 visits in 12 months, with one per household. Hired vehicles require the appropriate temporary ePass and hire documents. Hire ePasses last seven days; hired vans and trailers have separate application and visit limits.

Cambridgeshire and Essex residents

Eligible Cambridgeshire and Essex households can register one car ePass for access to specified Hertfordshire centres. It does not permit vans or cars towing trailers. Check the eligible centres and bring proof of address before travelling.

Business disposal is a separate service

Business waste cannot use the household ePass scheme. A separate booked, paid drop-off service operates at Ware and Welwyn Garden City. Check its accepted materials, vehicle limits, opening times and charges before booking.

About this category

About Hertfordshire County Council

Hertfordshire County Council operates 16 recycling centres for residents to manage their household waste. DIY or home improvement waste can be taken, but only in limited amounts, so larger projects may need alternative arrangements. Business waste cannot use the household service. Separate booked, paid business-waste drop-off services operate at Ware and Welwyn Garden City. An ePass is required for household visits, including ordinary cars. Vans and trailers need the appropriate ePass; eligible Cambridgeshire and Essex residents can apply for a car ePass for specified centres. Always check site rules before your visit to ensure smooth access.
