Overview

East Lothian Council’s current operational network has three recycling centres: Dunbar, Kinwegar at Wallyford and North Berwick. The council’s directory also retains a Macmerry listing, but its dedicated site record says Macmerry closed permanently. This page therefore includes one potentially obsolete association; check the individual records carefully before travelling.

Check the three-centre service and vehicle booking rules

The current council service has three recycling centres. Vans and trailers need the appropriate booking arrangements; check the council’s instructions before visiting. Check the Macmerry closure information before relying on an older site listing.

Some common DIY materials are not accepted

The council says its centres do not accept plasterboard, asbestos or tyres. Liquid paint is also excluded. Check the official material guidance before loading these items so you can arrange a suitable alternative.

Plan around holiday closures

The published normal opening time is 8.30am to 5pm. Centres close on 25–26 December and 1–2 January, with earlier closing on Christmas Eve and Hogmanay. Check current notices as well as the normal timetable.

Please separate your items for recycling before arrival to help save time and ensure efficient use of facilities. Attendants cannot assist with unloading, so only bring items you can safely manage to place in containers yourself. For safety reasons, children and pets must remain in your vehicle at all times while on site.
