Check queues and bring proof of address

Durham’s recycling centres are for residents of the Durham County Council area. Bring proof of address in case staff request it. The council’s centre page shows opening status and estimated queues, updated hourly. Separate your waste before leaving home and check that your chosen site accepts each material.

Van, pick-up and trailer permits

A van, pick-up, minibus or vehicle towing a trailer needs a waste permit. Download a new QR-code permit for each visit and show it on your phone or as an A4 printout. Permits are free, with up to 12 per year; the allowance resets in January. The waste and vehicle details must match the permit.

Vehicle size and type exclusions still apply. A permit does not make a banned vehicle eligible, and pedestrians cannot enter.

Hazardous waste and cooling appliances

A separate hazardous-waste requirement applies to chemicals, specified paints, asbestos and fridges or freezers, including when carried in a car. Check the permitted site and packaging instructions before travelling. Hazardous-waste permits are valid for seven days and count within the household’s annual permit allocation. A cooling-appliance permit covers one appliance, which must be empty, clean and intact.

About Durham Council

Durham County Council operates 12 Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) for residents to recycle and dispose of household waste. These sites are strictly for local residents, and proof of address may be requested on arrival. Business and landlord waste is not accepted, and staff may ask about the type or amount of waste being disposed of. Only certain vehicles are permitted entry. If yours is not, you will need to apply for a garden and household waste permit.
