Choose the correct waste permit

For eligible larger vehicles, an annual recycling permit allows unlimited visits with the listed recyclable materials. A general-waste permit covers one visit per household within one month, with the waste specified in advance. Check which permit matches your load.

Check excluded vehicles before hiring

Some vehicles cannot enter even with a permit, including Luton vans, tail-lift vehicles, tippers, vehicles with more than four wheels and vans towing trailers. Trailers over 3m are excluded. Check the complete list before hiring or borrowing transport.

Walking visits and cross-county access

Pedestrians carrying waste need a permit for safe access. Cumberland and Westmorland and Furness residents can use the wider 14-centre Cumbria network, but must obtain any required permit through their own council. Check the chosen site for specialist-material acceptance and opening days.

About this category

About Cumberland Council

Cumberland Council has seven Household Waste Recycling Centres. Together with Westmorland and Furness, there are 14 sites available for residents. Please sort your waste and recycling before visiting to save time and ensure materials are placed in the correct designated containers. Wear suitable footwear when on site. Be aware that centres may close briefly during the day for container exchanges. A waste permit is required if you are using a van, utility vehicle, double axle trailer (up to 3m), or arriving on foot.
