Using Bristol recycling centres

Bristol has three Reuse and Recycling Centres at St Philips, Avonmouth and Hartcliffe Way. They are for Bristol residents disposing of household waste, with separate arrangements for bookings, larger vehicles and some types of DIY waste.

When open, all three centres operate:

• 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday
• 8am to 4pm Saturday
• 8am to 4pm Sunday

Holiday opening arrangements can differ, so visitors should check Bristol City Council’s current guidance before travelling.

Booking and residency

Visitors normally need to book before using a Bristol recycling centre and must bring photo identification and proof of a Bristol address. Bicycle visits do not require a booking, and pedestrians can access Hartcliffe Way without booking. Check the current council guidance before travelling if you are unsure which rules apply to your visit.

Vans, trailers and larger vehicles

Vans, pick-ups and towing trailers over 1.52 metres need a permit. Household waste only is allowed under the permit scheme, and business or trade waste must not be taken to the household recycling centres. Vehicles over 2.4 metres high can use Hartcliffe Way only.

If using a hire vehicle, select the hire-vehicle option when booking and bring the vehicle hire agreement with you. Separate rules apply to hired vans and trailers, so check Bristol City Council’s current guidance before travelling.

DIY and construction waste

Bristol accepts limited amounts of household DIY and construction waste free of charge within published allowances. Charges apply above those limits, so residents taking soil, rubble, plasterboard, sanitary ware or similar materials should check the current council guidance before booking.

Reuse options

Bristol’s recycling-centre network includes Reuse Shops and donation points for suitable reusable items. Access arrangements differ between St Philips, Avonmouth and Hartcliffe Way, so visitors should check the official guidance for the relevant site.

Trade and business waste

Bristol’s household recycling centres are for household waste from residents. Business and trade waste must use an appropriate licensed waste service instead.
