Opening patterns differ sharply across Argyll and Bute. Island centres can have limited opening days or short sessions, so check the individual centre page rather than assuming the mainland timetable applies.

Keep upholstered seating separate

Sofas, armchairs, cushions and beanbags need the designated upholstered-seating area. Keep these items separate from other waste, and ask staff where to unload them. The council says damaged upholstery should be covered and secured with tape.

Business waste uses separate arrangements

Household access does not cover business waste. Commercial arrangements vary by location: Tiree businesses need a paid waste-dump ticket for Gott Bay, while Biffa handles commercial enquiries for several mainland sites. Check the appropriate service before loading.

Due to the local geography, operating hours and accepted materials vary significantly between sites, particularly on the islands of Mull, Coll, Islay, and Tiree.

The Upholstered Furniture Rule (POPs)

New regulations require all upholstered seating (sofas, armchairs, cushions, beanbags) to be handled separately:

Designated Zones: These items MUST go into the specific "Upholstered Furniture" area.
Damage Control: If an item is torn, you must secure the tears with tape before arrival to prevent loose fabric or foam escaping.

Island vs. Mainland Access

Mainland Hubs: Sites like Blackhill and Moleigh generally open 7 days a week with seasonal shifts in closing times.

Island Sites: Often have limited hours. Check the individual centre pages for Coll and Colonsay before travelling, as opening days and times vary.

Hazardous & Specialty Waste

Asbestos Disposal: Strictly regulated. You must double-wrap it in UN-approved packaging (red inner, clear outer).
Tiree Commercial Tickets: Businesses on Tiree must pre-pay for a "Waste Dump Ticket" online before visiting Gott Bay.
Charity Partnerships: Westlands (Bute) and Glengorm (Mull) accept clean furniture and working electrics for reuse.

Important Timing Tips

Last Entry: Gates close strictly 15 minutes before the official closing time.
Holiday Closures: All sites are closed on Dec 25–26 and Jan 1–2.
