Light bulb recycling is not as simple as you might think and often causes confusion. Some light bulbs can be recycled and some cant so have to go in the rubbish bin.

Incandescent or standard household light bulbs can’t be recycled so this type of bulb can be disposed of with general waste.

Halogen light bulbs can’t be recycled either so these can also be disposed of in with general waste.

LED light bulbs contain no harmful substances so can go in general waste

CFL or energy saving bulbs and fluorescent tube type bulbs can be recycled but they should not be put in the general waste or recycle bin.

Some councils offer light bulb recycling at the household waste recycle centre, to find out if the recycling centre near you accepts this type of waste contact them before you visit.
