Batteries are in loads of items and appliances around the home and office and come in all shapes and sizes. Batteries are classed as hazardous waste and need to be disposed of correctly. You cannot put batteries in your general waste or standard household recycling bins.
Lots of supermarkets and shops have small collection points where you can drop off old batteries, usually located near the checkout. You just pop your old batteries in the collection bin and you’re done.
Local council household recycling centres have special bins where you can drop off waste batteries for recycling. Even small batteries contain chemicals and materials that can be really damaging to the environment. When recycled correctly at the recycling plant heavy metals can be removed from old batteries and repurposed into new battery cells.
