Car battery recycling is very important because batteries contain some pretty nasty chemicals. Your waste car battery can be recycled at the council recycling centre or Tip near you.

When you visit the recycling site you will find that they have a special storage space to house the waste batteries as they are considered hazardous waste and must be handled very carefully.

They contain a liquid acid and lead/zinc plates as well as plastics that can be recycled safely if handled correctly.

If you take your waste car, van or truck batteries to the recycling facility it will be sent off to a battery recycling plant to be processed but some companies such as scrap metal merchants actually pay cash for old batteries, they still end up at the battery recycling plant so before you give it away check if you can sell it locally.
